Gateway to Northeast
Siliguri is the strategic gateway to India's Northeast, connecting seven states and three international borders.
Siliguri's tech journey accelerated with STPI establishment in 2006. The city's strategic "Chicken's Neck" location made it a natural IT hub for Northeast connectivity.
Major spiritual and tourist destination
Biodiversity hotspot near city
Famous cross-border goods market
Historic temple in city center
Siliguri's strategic position at India's "Chicken's Neck" corridor creates unique opportunities that no other Indian city can match. This 22-km wide strip connecting Northeast India to the mainland borders Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh—making Siliguri a natural hub for cross-border commerce, logistics, and regional connectivity.
STPI Siliguri, established in 2006, provides 32 plug-n-play incubation seats and serves as the IT infrastructure backbone for the region. The center supports software exports and IT/ITES companies looking to tap into Northeast markets. West Bengal government has identified Siliguri as one of three satellite IT hubs alongside Kolkata.
University of North Bengal (NIRF 51-100 band, NAAC B++) anchors higher education with 40,000 students. Inspiria Knowledge Campus has emerged as the entrepreneurship catalyst, hosting Techstars Startup Weekend since 2019 in partnership with Google for Startups. The 2025 edition saw intensive mentorship from 12 experts with participants receiving $300 cloud credits.
Local startups like Darjeeling Soap Company and Desi Laundry demonstrate Siliguri's cross-border advantage—similar consumer mindsets across India-Nepal-Bhutan borders create natural expansion paths. Desi Laundry is already planning Nepal operations.
For founders, Siliguri offers: gateway access to 50 million Northeast Indian consumers, cross-border commerce opportunities (Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh), tourism-tech potential (Darjeeling, Sikkim nearby), tea industry digitization, and India's lowest cost of living ($314/month average). Bagdogra Airport provides connectivity to major metros. The challenge is limited VC presence—but for bootstrapped ventures targeting Northeast or cross-border markets, Siliguri provides unmatched geographic advantage.
