Steel City's Digital Forge
Salem, known for its steel and textile industries, is building tech capabilities. Strong engineering colleges and manufacturing heritage create opportunities for industrial AI.
Salem's tech journey is intrinsically linked to C. Valliappa and the Sona Group. In the 1980s, Valliappa's Sona Towers in Bangalore hosted Texas Instruments' first Indian software design center, followed by Verifone, Oracle, and Cisco - essentially igniting India's IT boom. Sona College of Technology (1997) brought quality tech education to Salem. The ELCOT IT Park (2010) formalized the city's IT ambitions. The 2023-2025 period saw emergence of Sona i-TBI as a significant deep-tech incubator with Think Salem 2025 showcasing Tier-2 innovation.

Salem represents the growing potential of India's Tier-2 cities in the innovation landscape. The city's transformation from traditional steel and textile hub to emerging tech center demonstrates how regional ecosystems can nurture nationally relevant, technology-led startups.
The Sona Group's legacy provides a unique foundation. C. Valliappa, who pioneered India's IT revolution by hosting Texas Instruments' first Indian office in Bangalore in the 1980s, has channeled resources into building Salem's innovation ecosystem. The 10,000-sq ft Sona i-TBI, first incubator in Salem district, has incubated 19 startups with impressive results - NervePro's portable nerve-monitoring system for surgeries, DroneTribes' agriculture and security drones at TRL 6, and IswiftPro's IoT/AI energy management solutions.
Educational institutions provide strong foundations. Sona College of Technology achieved Top 50 Innovation ranking in NIRF 2024 with 91% placements and NAAC A++ accreditation. Periyar University, ranked #56 among Universities, offers research programs including AI and computer science. Government College of Engineering Salem adds government-backed technical education with 100% CSE placement record.
Infrastructure is developing rapidly. The 53-acre ELCOT IT Park on NH-44 provides IT-ready space with 100% power backup and modern facilities. Salem Airport resumed commercial flights in 2023, connecting to Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Cochin. Salem Junction serves as a major railway hub. The extremely affordable cost of living (among the 1% cheapest globally) makes it attractive for bootstrapped startups.
Think Salem 2025, hosted at Sona College, showcased the city's growing role in India's innovation landscape. With 12 startups receiving DST-NIDHI grants and 5 securing Startup India Seed Fund investments, Salem demonstrates that impactful deep-tech innovation can emerge from Tier-2 cities with the right ecosystem support.
