Salem's tech journey is intrinsically linked to C. Valliappa and the Sona Group. In the 1980s, Valliappa's Sona Towers in Bangalore hosted Texas Instruments' first Indian software design center, followed by Verifone, Oracle, and Cisco - essentially igniting India's IT boom. Sona College of Technology (1997) brought quality tech education to Salem. The ELCOT IT Park (2010) formalized the city's IT ambitions.
