The Oxford of the East
Pune combines a rich academic tradition with a thriving IT industry. Our chapter connects researchers from top universities with industry practitioners building production AI systems.
Pune's tech story began when Infosys was founded here in 1981 by N.R. Narayana Murthy and 6 engineers with $250, before relocating to Bangalore in 1983. The city became India's automotive R&D hub with Tata Motors, Mahindra, and global OEMs setting up operations. KPIT Technologies, founded in 1990, now leads automotive AI globally. In 2020, Accenture opened a Nano Lab for AI/XR research. TCS Sahyadri Park houses 20,000 employees.

Pune is India's most underrated tech hub, combining automotive AI leadership with enterprise software excellence. The city has produced 7 unicorns including FirstCry, Icertis, Druva, and MindTickle, yet operates with 30-40% lower costs than Bangalore.
The automotive AI ecosystem is Pune's crown jewel. KPIT Technologies, founded in 1990 by Ravi Pandit and Kishor Patil, has become the global leader in automotive software with ₹4,930Cr revenue and partnerships with Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and major OEMs. The company employs 9,287 engineers working on Software-Defined Vehicles, ADAS, and battery management systems. Tata Elxsi's 1,000-engineer center in Chinchwad works on autonomous technologies and connected vehicles. BMW TechWorks India (JV with Tata Technologies) develops code for the Neue Klasse EV platform.
Historical significance runs deep. Infosys was born in Pune in 1981 when N.R. Narayana Murthy and six colleagues incorporated the company with just $250 in capital. While they moved to Bangalore in 1983, this origin story is often forgotten. Today, TCS Sahyadri Park houses 20,000 employees, and every major IT services company has significant Pune operations.
Persistent Systems represents Pune's homegrown enterprise software success. Founded by Dr. Anand Deshpande (IIT Kharagpur, PhD Indiana) in 1990, the company has grown to 23,000+ employees and $1B+ revenue. The founder culture is strong - Deshpande moved to a full-time Chairman role in 2024, passing operational leadership while staying engaged.
The unicorn ecosystem spans multiple verticals. Icertis ($2.8B) dominates contract lifecycle management with AI-powered solutions for Fortune 500 clients. FirstCry ($2.7B) completed its IPO in August 2024 and now operates 1,000+ stores across Asia. Druva leads in cloud data protection. These companies have created a second-generation ecosystem where former employees become founders and angel investors.
The incubation infrastructure dates back to 1986 when Science and Technology Park (SciTech Park) was established as one of India's first STEPs. It has since incubated 125+ startups. Venture Center, affiliated with the National Chemical Laboratory, focuses on deep tech commercialization. COEP's Bhau Institute supports student entrepreneurs.
Cost advantages are significant. A 1BHK in Hinjewadi costs ₹10,000-15,000/month compared to ₹25,000+ in Bangalore's tech corridors. Couples can live comfortably on ₹30,000-60,000/month. This allows startups to extend runway while accessing similar talent pools. The proximity to Mumbai (2.5 hours by expressway) provides access to capital and corporate clients without Mumbai's costs.
