Jodhpur is writing a new chapter in its 565-year history—transforming from the medieval stronghold of the Rathore clan into Rajasthan's emerging AI and deep tech hub. The city that gave India the legendary Mehrangarh Fort is now building a different kind of fortress: one of research institutions, tech incubators, and heritage-tech startups.

The anchor is IIT Jodhpur, ranked #27 in Engineering (NIRF 2025). Established in 2008, the institute has grown to 2,500+ students on an 852-acre campus designed as a "Living Laboratory" for sustainable desert living. The School of Artificial Intelligence & Data Science brings together pioneers in generative AI, robotics, and computational neuroscience. The Executive M.Tech in AI, launched in 2020, was one of India's first stackable AI degrees aligned with the New Education Policy. With 2,400+ research publications and a 92% placement rate (highest package Rs 61 LPA from Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs), IIT Jodhpur punches well above its weight.

The iHub Drishti Foundation, a Technology Innovation Hub under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems, focuses on Computer Vision and AR/VR—perfect for a city whose heritage could be digitized and experienced immersively by millions. Mehrangarh Fort itself now features AR battle recreations and digital guided tours, pointing to the massive opportunity in heritage-tech. Healthcare AI is another frontier. AIIMS Jodhpur and IIT Jodhpur jointly offer M.Tech and PhD programs in Medical Technologies. The collaboration has produced breakthrough work: the DomainAdapt framework for childhood malnutrition detection achieves 98.5% accuracy using smartphone photos, potentially transforming screening in resource-limited settings. The AnthroVision dataset of 16,938 images from 2,141 children is a first-of-its-kind resource. Other innovations include smartphone-based glucose monitoring and AI-powered hypertensive retinopathy diagnosis.

The renewable energy opportunity is vast. Jodhpur sits in the Thar Desert with some of India's highest solar irradiance. IIT Jodhpur's Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy, partnered with Rajasthan Solar Association, researches solar thermal applications, brackish water conversion, and remote monitoring AI. The campus itself targets net-zero operations with a 15MW solar farm and CO2 capture using microalgae.

But perhaps Jodhpur's most unique opportunity lies in heritage-tech. The city is India's 2nd largest handicraft exporter, with 50,000-75,000 families engaged in wooden furniture, Bandhani textiles, and traditional crafts. Yet most artisans lack digital presence or direct market access. AI-powered design tools, quality control systems, and direct-to-consumer platforms could transform this $100M+ industry while preserving centuries-old techniques.

IIT Jodhpur alumni have founded 18 companies raising $82.3M, including PushOwl (acquired by Sendinblue). The ecosystem is young but growing—Jodhpur ranks #34 in India for startups.
