Mountain Tech Paradise
Gangtok is Sikkim's capital, India's first fully organic state with stunning Himalayan views and unique tech potential.
SMU (1995) was India's first PPP in higher education. Sikkim AI policy (2024) positions state as Himalayan tech hub.

Sikkim's tech story is remarkable: from India's least populated state known for organic farming and Buddhist monasteries to an "Emerging Leader" in India's startup ecosystem. The Government of Sikkim's AI policy and INSPIRES Programme (World Bank supported) are creating the country's first Himalayan tech hub.
The foundation was laid by Sikkim Manipal University (1995), India's first public-private partnership in higher education. SMU's Rs 54 LPA highest placement package and 400+ recruiters demonstrate the quality. SMIT (Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology) produces engineering talent in an environment very different from typical Indian tech campuses.
The breakthrough came with Apuphi AI—founded by Diwash Kapil Chettri and Sulabh Raj Gurung—raising German FDI at $4.4M valuation in 2026. Industry observers note this challenges the concentration of VC in Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai. Ourguest Travels, winning the National Maharathi Challenge, became Northeast's first Online Travel Aggregator.
For founders, Sikkim offers: India's only 100% organic state (agritech opportunities), pristine Himalayan environment (wellness tech), tourism infrastructure (travel tech), World Bank-backed innovation support, and a state government actively positioning for AI leadership. The challenge is connectivity and limited local market—but for remote-first, India-focused startups, Gangtok offers unique positioning.
