Coal Capital Innovation
Dhanbad is India's coal capital, home to IIT ISM Dhanbad, one of India's oldest technical institutions.
Indian School of Mines established 1926 by British on lines of Royal School of Mines London. Third oldest to become IIT.
Historic 1926 campus, Centre of National Importance
Largest coking coal deposit in India
Scenic wildlife sanctuary
Major dam on Barakar River
Dhanbad's transformation from Coal Capital to Mining Technology Capital represents India's energy transition story. The Indian School of Mines, established in 1926 by the British (on the lines of Royal School of Mines, London), became IIT ISM in 2016. Today, it ranks NIRF #15 in Engineering and serves as a think tank for 11 ministries of the Government of India.
The game-changer is TEXMiN - the Technology Innovation Hub for Extraction and Processing of Critical Minerals. Established by DST under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems, TEXMiN has been elevated to a Technology Translation Research Park (TTRP), one of only four in India. With Coal India establishing the IMiN Center of Excellence for Mining 4.0, Dhanbad is becoming the epicenter of mining AI.
The research output is remarkable: Prof. Partha Pratim Mandal's team applied AI/ML tools to mineral exploration across 70,000 sq km in Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. CIMFR's AI blast prediction model was trained on 699 blasts across 33 mines. The Critical Minerals Centre supports India's strategic minerals independence.
For mining tech founders, Dhanbad offers: IIT-quality talent, Coal India and ONGC as enterprise customers, CIMFR research partnerships, and 60% lower costs than Delhi. The city is surrounded by 112 coal mines generating Rs 700 crore annually - a massive market for safety AI, optimization tech, and clean coal solutions.
