Where Le Corbusier's Vision Meets AI Innovation
India's first planned city hosts 950+ IT companies and 633 DPIIT-recognized startups. The tricity (Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula) produced PrepLadder ($50M acquisition) and AgNext ($32.7M raised, India's largest AgTech Series A). With 29% lower costs than Bangalore and proximity to IISER Mohali and IIT Ropar, it's emerging as North India's AI gateway.
Chandigarh's tech journey began with IT Park's launch in 2005, but rapid growth came in the 2010s when the city briefly outpaced Bangalore in IT growth rate. The SPIC incubator (2014) accelerated the startup ecosystem, incubating 82 companies including CommonFloor and Practo before they moved to Bangalore.

Chandigarh represents one of India's most intriguing tech ecosystems—a planned city with unplanned startup success. The tricity region (Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula) has quietly built a formidable tech presence with 633 DPIIT-recognized startups, 950+ IT companies, and 75,000 tech professionals. In the early 2010s, the city's IT growth rate briefly exceeded both Bangalore and Pune, a remarkable achievement for a Union Territory.
The ecosystem's crown jewel is its research infrastructure. CRIKC (Chandigarh Region Innovation & Knowledge Cluster) brings together an extraordinary concentration of national institutes: IISER Mohali for fundamental sciences, IIT Ropar for engineering, IMTECH for biotechnology, NIPER for pharmaceuticals, CSIO for scientific instruments, and CDAC for computing. This creates a unique multidisciplinary research environment that few Indian cities can match. ISB Mohali adds business education to the mix, producing founders who understand both technology and markets.
The city has produced notable exits that validate the ecosystem. PrepLadder, a medical exam preparation platform, was acquired by Unacademy for $50 million in 2020—built entirely in Chandigarh before the acquisition. AgNext Technologies raised $32.7 million (including India's largest AgTech Series A at $21M) for its AI-powered food quality assessment platform, reaching an $81.8M valuation. These success stories, along with Kalaari-backed Jugnoo and Wipro Consumer Care-backed LetsShave, demonstrate that major outcomes are possible outside traditional tech hubs.
Chandigarh's advantages are compelling for AI entrepreneurs. The cost arbitrage is significant—29% cheaper than Bangalore overall with 84% lower rents—while maintaining India's highest quality of life indices. The city's proximity to Punjab and Haryana's agricultural heartland creates natural opportunities for AgriTech and AI applications in farming, food processing, and supply chain optimization. Strong NRI connections to the UK, US, and Canada provide global market access, while excellent connectivity to Delhi (3.5 hours by Shatabdi Express) keeps founders plugged into the national ecosystem.
