About Bangalore

Bangalore's tech journey began in 1985 when Texas Instruments set up India's first offshore development center, famously using satellite links to communicate with the US. The 1984 liberalization of hardware/software imports set the stage for Wipro and Infosys. The move of Infosys HQ from Pune to Bangalore created thousands of jobs. By 2022-23, Karnataka accounted for 42% of India's software exports ($65B). Today the city hosts 461 AI startups and attracted $3.9B in H1 2025 alone.

AI Ecosystem in Bangalore

Bangalore stands as India's undisputed AI capital, commanding over 40% of the nation's AI talent and startup activity. The city's transformation from IT services hub to AI innovation center has been remarkable, driven by a unique confluence of factors.

The talent pipeline is unmatched. IISc consistently ranks as India's #1 research institution, with its AI/ML programs producing world-class researchers. IIIT-Bangalore specializes in applied AI, while colleges like PES and RV produce thousands of skilled engineers annually. This creates a talent density unmatched anywhere in India.

Global tech giants have made Bangalore their India AI headquarters. Google Research India, based in Bangalore, has contributed foundational work in Indian language NLP. Microsoft Research Lab focuses on AI for social good, particularly in healthcare and agriculture. Amazon's largest R&D center outside the US is here, with significant AI/ML teams. NVIDIA's deep learning team develops GPU computing solutions.

The startup ecosystem has matured significantly. First-generation success stories like Flipkart (acquired by Walmart for $21B) and Ola have created a generation of angel investors and experienced operators. This flywheel effect continues with companies like Razorpay, CRED, and most recently Krutrim - India's first AI unicorn building foundational models for Indian languages.

Funding is abundant. Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia India), Accel, Matrix Partners, and numerous other VCs are headquartered here. Average Series A rounds have grown to $8-12M, with AI startups often commanding premium valuations. The angel investor community, including networks like Indian Angel Network, provides early-stage capital and mentorship.

Key AI sectors include conversational AI (Haptik, Uniphore, Observe.AI), computer vision (SigTuple, Uncanny Vision), AI infrastructure (Sarvam AI, Hasura), and enterprise AI (Freshworks AI, Yellow.ai). The healthcare AI sector is particularly strong, with startups like SigTuple and Qure.ai developing diagnostic tools used globally.

The ecosystem is supported by incubators like NSRCEL at IIM Bangalore, IISc Research Park, and NASSCOM's Centre of Excellence for AI. These provide not just funding but mentorship, infrastructure, and access to the broader tech ecosystem.
